Westview Studio Retreat is located in the rural settlement of Lochend in Northmavine, a wild and remote peninsula on the northernmost part of the Shetland mainland. The area is renowned for its dramatic scenery and outstanding geology, with the accomodation being accessible by vehicle, cycle or occasional bus to a variety of nearby stunning walking destinations. Roas Water & Giants Garden, Fethaland, Uyea, Ronas Hill, Shetland’s highest summit & Lang Ayre, to name but a few.
Northmavine is also home to Eshaness, with its extraordinary cliff edges, dramatic scenery and spectacular coastal walks. Teeming with wildlife and geology to blow the mind, the location makes a great base for artists & creatives, photographers, walkers, birdwatchers, those looking to see orcas and otters or anybody wishing to simply have time out.
UYEA
Westview Studio Retreat is currently undergoing some renovations and it is anticipated its availability for rental & creative retreat will be from 2025. On offer is the opportunity for 2 or 4 week self guided residencies/retreats in a peerie, well lit, detached, single storey self catering furnished cabin style accommodation for up to two people sharing. Cosy bedroom with small double bed, seperate shower/ toilet room with electric shower & heated towel rail. Study room off the sitting room provides an additional single settee style bed & desk. Joining the two is a well lit galley kitchen, with fridge, electric hob & oven, kettle & washing machine. Electric panel heating is included and there is also the benefit of a wood burner for additional heat if required, logs etc can be purchased at the nearby shop in Hiilswick. Please note there is no landline or TV connected at the property so a mobile phone is advisable if not essential. The property offers full fibre broadband for all your wifi needs and excellent mobile phone signal considering the remote location.
Attached to the accomodation cabin, and currently in development is a naturally lit compact studio/work area, with electricty, sink & water, for drawing/textile/painting/writing or just gazing down at the wonderful coastal view. There is onsite parking at Westview Studio Retreat for one small vehicle, access is via a shared steep track so very large/long vehicles are not permitted. You are encouraged to bring your own materials/ tools/equipment etc, as only you know what you wish to explore. It is also worth mentioning the weather can be variable in Shetland, so decent & warm walking attire and waterproofs are pretty much agiven.

Application is via submission of portfolio & resume, as its important to the host, an artist herself to understand your requirements and expectations for using the space. Amateurs, beginners, professional creatives, artists, photographers, geologists, wild life enthusiasts all welcome. The price offered is for the whole accommodation, which can support 1-2 people sharing. However at least one occupant must be applying for the residency opportunity. Ideal for example for a couple, who wish to share the experience with different agendas. Perfect for walking, exploring, time out, developing new work exploring the geology etc. Available for minimum two week or maximum four week opportunity. Rental rate with dates TBC and available on inquiry.
A car is highly advisable as the location, a rural yet coastal hamlet is not on an all day bus route. The nearest well stocked community shop in Ollaberry, with fuel & vehicle garage is aprox. 6 miles away. Further amenities can be found in Hillswick, or Brae. The latter includes: a health centre; fish and chip shop; and a Chinese take-away. Here there is also a small boat marina and boating club; garage with shop and fuel pumps; a supermarket; and a Builder’s merchants.
