Westview Studio Retreat is located in the rural settlement of Lochend in Northmavine, the northernmost part of Shetland mainland. This area is renowned for its dramatic scenery and outstanding geology: with Roer Water & Giants Garden, Fethaland, Uyea, Ronas Hill, Shetland’s highest summit & Lang Ayre to name a few. All stunning locations accessible by either by vehicle then walking, or easy hiking near the property via rural tracks.

Northmavine is also home to  Eshaness, with its extraordinary dramatic volcanic cliff edges, and spectacular coastal walks. Teeming with wildlife and geological architecure to blow the mind, making a great base for artists & creatives, photographers, walkers, or nature lovers looking to see flora and fauna at its utmost best.

The Studio Retreat is currently wintering and it is anticipated its availability for rental & creative retreat will be later 2025. On offer is the opportunity for 2 or 4 week self catering creative residencies/retreats in a peerie, well lit, detached, single storey cabin style accommodation for up to two people sharing. Cosy bedroom with double bed, shower/ toilet room with electric shower & heated towel rail. Study/dining room off the sitting room provides an additional single style bed & desk.  Joining the two is a well lit galley kitchen, with fridge, electric hob & oven, kettle & washing machine. Electric heating and woodburner stove is available. The property offers full fibre unlimited broadband for all your wifi needs and excellent mobile phone signal considering the remote location. Please note however there is no landline or TV connected at the property so personal devices are advisable if not essential if you need to be connected to the outside world.

Attached to the accomodation cabin, seperately accessed from the garden is a naturally lit compact studio/work area. Currently in development, with electricty, sink & water, for drawing/textile/painting/writing or just gazing down at the wonderful coastal view. There is onsite parking at Westview Studio Retreat for one small vehicle only. Access is via a shared, short steep dirt track and very large/long vehicles are strictly not permitted. There is a daily local feeder bus serving Ollaberry and Brae, but a vehicle is advisable as the buses are only twice daily. You are encouraged to bring your own materials/ tools/equipment etc as the studio space only provides work bench, sink and power. It is also worth mentioning the weather can be variable in Shetland, so decent & warm walking attire and waterproofs are pretty much a given.

Application is open to anyone, via submission of portfolio & resume, as its important to the host, an artist herself to understand your requirements and expectations for using the space. Amateurs & professional creatives, artists, photographers, geologists, wild life enthusiasts all welcome. The price offered is for the whole accommodation, which can support up to 1-2 people sharing, with at least one applicant applying for the residency opportunity. Ideal for example for a couple/ or two friends, who wish to share the experience with different agendas. Or an individual who wants the time on their own. Perfect for walking, exploring, time out, developing new work exploring the geology etc. Available for minimum two week or maximum four week opportunity. Unfortunately at this time dogs can not be accomodated due to the surrounding croft land being used for sheep.

A car is highly advisable as the location, a rural yet coastal hamlet is not on an all day bus route. The nearest well stocked community shop in Ollaberry, with fuel & vehicle garage is aprox. 6 miles away.  Further amenities can be found in Hillswick also about 6 miles away. Brae, about 15 miles away offers more amenities including a fish & chip shop, a Chinese take-away, Coop and garage with fuel pumps. Here there is also a small boat marina & boating club and a Builder’s merchants.

For guests arriving via ferry or airoplane, lifts can be pre arranged from Sumburgh or Lerwick at an additional cost, please inquire. There are also car hire options from Lerwick and Sumburgh.There are buses but not regular and taxis are bookable in advance but will incur a hefty charge as the airport is 60 miles distant.
